Here are the changes to basketball games the rest of the wek:
The JH game at McCurtain for Thursday night is cancelled. The JH and HS games at Red Oak Friday are postponed until Tues, Feb 8:00. JH will be starting at 1:00 and HS at 6:30.

Parents and Guardians of Quinton Public Schools. We have been monitoring the situation very closely and the predictions have changed.
Here is the situation: They are now thinking the freezing rain and possibly hail will begin earlier than first anticipated. We would be fine at the start of school at 8:00am but it will probably be a much different story by 3:00pm. The last thing we want to do is put our students and staff at risk.
Our solution is as follows: We will go Distance Learning on Wednesday and we will use Snow Days for Thursday and Friday. We do not want to assign work on those days if we have students who might not have electricity.
The K-2 games at Keota will now be played on Feb 16. The JH game on Thursday will not be played. The JH and HS games on Friday with Red Oak will move to Tuesday at the same times. We wanted to get the most accurate information possible before making this decision. Thank You for your understanding.

Parents and Guardians of Quinton Public Schools. I know many of you , like all of us, have been watching the weather forecast for the middle and end of the week. We are all fairly sure we will receive some winter weather however, the big questions are still what type of precipitation we will get, how much will we get and when will we get it. We are actively monitoring the weather forecast. We want to be prepared but don't want to react too quickly as the forecast is still unfolding. First and foremost, the safety of our students and staff will be our first priority. Hopefully by tomorrow we will be in a better position to make an informed decision on our best course of action. Please check back for updates. Thank you for your understanding.

Tuesday's Student Section theme is White Lies T-Shirts. Please be school appropriate.

Homecoming will begin at 5:45 this evening.

Tonight's Basketball homecoming and the following Highschool Basketball games will be livestreamed at qps.mylivegame.com Homecoming begins at 5:45 pm. A stable internet connection is required to view.

I thought this would be a great chance to help with some confusing information. We are voting on a 3.9 million dollar bond on February 8th. This will give us a Net or (spendable amount) of 3.4 million dollars. This allows us to pay interest and fees upfront so we can pay contractors as we build. This is exactly like when you buy a car at a dealer. You borrow the money and they figure in all costs and fees and then cut the dealer a check for your purchase amount. You however, will wind up paying the cost of the vehicle and all interest for the life of the loan. School finance is different in how we have to contract and pay verses you as an individual. This is done to ensure taxpayers dollars are accounted for and not misspent.

Student Section Themes for this week are:
Tuesday, Jan. 25-- Jersey Day (wear your favorite jersey)
Thursday, Jan. 27-- Men In Black

We will be hosting the Class A Regional Basketball Tournament February 17-19. We'll need gate workers and help with the hospitality room. We'll work on a schedule for gate and food next week. If you think you can help out, please let us know.

Over the weekend the Quinton Speech team competed in a virtual tournament at Okmulgee. Congrats to the following students for placing:
Ashlynn Franklin, 1st, MO,
Claire Lowrimore, 1st, Poetry
Chesney Higgins, 2nd, Poetry

Patrons of Quinton Public Schools. At this time we are planning to have all sites open for in person instruction on Monday. Hopefully we have the worst of this round behind us. Please remember this is an ever changing situation. As always, we will update you if anything changes. Thank you for your understanding.

The JH Basketball game scheduled for Monday with Whitefield has been cancelled.

Next week is Basketball Homecoming Week. Here is a list of spirit days:
Jan. 24 (Monday) PJ'S or Formal Wear. Choose which style best suits you.
Jan. 25 (Tuesday) Rocker or Rapper. Are you an 80s Hair Metal Band member or is Slim Shady more your style?
Jan. 26 ( Wednesday) Anything but a backpack. How creative can you be hauling your school supplies around?
Jan. 27 (Thursday) Spirit Day. Rock your Kelly Green and White.

We had some great questions about the upcoming bond. I will do my best to answer those so bear with me this may be a long post. The land purchase adjacent to the Event Center. We had the opportunity to purchase this land. This allows us to serve the future needs of the district in several possible ways. Storage for equipment, a potential softball/baseball hitting facility ( which we really don't have now) and additional parking. If you have been to a recent graduation or elementary program you have already seen the great need for additional parking. Crossing a dark highway is not really a great solution. This land was purchased for $75,000 over 10 years. For perspective, a new bus will run about $95,000. Before we decided to run this bond again I walked the current cafeteria with a general contractor. There is no way to expand the current cafeteria because north and east you have city streets, and south there already is a building and to the west you have a sidewalk, the main lines and a building. We reached $900.000 pretty quickly and still had no way to expand. We need more storage in the back because we order food in bulk to cut down costs. There are no restrooms for people to use and the dining area is not really large enough. The main issue other than that is the drain lines are not in very good shape. We would have to cut into the slab in the kitchen area and redo those lines which were laid in 1969. When you start cutting into a cement slab and replacing lines it gets crazy expensive in a hurry. . Where would the bond money go? First and foremost it will be used to build the cafeteria and kitchen. What money is left over will be used to refurbish other buildings. This would include windows, paint, and various other things. This would only be done after the cafeteria/kitchen is completed. Lastly, the one everyone always asks. How much will this cost me? If the bond passes it will raise property taxes $4.44 per year for every $100 you currently pay. If you paid $500 per year it would raise your yearly tax bill $22.20. If currently pay $1,000 per year it would raise your taxes $44.40 or about $3.70 per month. As always please feel free to either call 918-469-3100 or email at twilson@quintonschools.com. I will always be glad to answer your bond questions.
